We offer a range of various different types of waterslide transfer. Each have their own specific properties, depending on their use. We use either cellulose or oil-based inks with a choice of cellulose or oil-based carrier varnish. The different types are described below:
Type 1: Our most popular, general pupose range has a very thin, water clear, cellulose carrier varnish over printed with oil-based inks. These are excellent for general purpose use, with some flexibilty to allow for application to two way curved objects especially if the transfer is brushed over with Decal-Fix (or similar), or a mild mixture of 2-butoxy-ethanol and water after it has been applied and whilst still wet. This will also make the transfer shrink and pull into and over detailed areas. The transfer can then be sealed over using an acrylic varnish.

Type 2: These transfers have an oil-based varnish over printed with oil-based inks and are our most flexible transfer most suited to application on tighter 2-way curved surfaces. However, the oil-based varnish has a yellow-brown tint, which darkens with age. They are best suited for transfers that have no exposed varnish areas, but are required to be more flexible. These should be sealed in position using an acrylic varnish.

Type 3: These are printed with oil-based inks, over-coated with oil-based varnish. They generally don't have much use these days due to the discolouring of the varnish, but they can be useful for reproductions of old transfers which were printed the same way. If these transfers are to be sealed in position, either an oil-based or acrylic varnish should be used.

Type 4: These are printed in cellulose inks sandwiched between a base coat of cellulose varnish and then over-coated with the same. They are the most inflexible of our range, but they are useful if the sealing varnish is to be cellulose. Obviously, acrylic or oil-based varnishes may be used also. Because these inks are so thin they tend to allow colours to bleed through, so care needs to taken with artwork to ensure that light colours are printed first, with darker colours on top. All colours will need a base coat of white if the transfers are to be applied to a dark surface.

Type 5: To overcome certain situations where oil-based varnish is required for flexibility, but not desired on the exposed areas, we offer a mix of Type 1 and Type 2 transfer. Basically, we first print the cellulose varnish in the areas where it will be visible and then print the oil-based varnish on the areas that require more flexibility. The oil-based varnish slightly overlaps the cellulose varnish to ensure that the transfer stays in one piece when it is being applied. These type of transfer are slightly more expensive to produce because it involves more complicated artwork and there is an additional varnish layer to print
